Posted on May 7, 2025

Scratched glasses can be frustrating, but there are a few DIY methods to help minimize their appearance. However, deep scratches may require professional polishing or lens replacement. Here are 5 ways to repair scratched glasses:

Table of Contents

Toggle
  • 1. Toothpaste (Non-Gel, Non-Abrasive)
  • 2. Baking Soda Paste
  • 3. Car Wax or Metal Polish (For Plastic Lenses)
  • 4. Eyeglass Scratch Repair Kit
  • 5. Professional Lens Polishing
  • Prevention Tips:

1. Toothpaste (Non-Gel, Non-Abrasive)

  • Works best on light scratches.

  • Steps:

    1. Clean the lens with water and mild soap.

    2. Apply a small dab of white, non-gel toothpaste (avoid whitening or abrasive kinds).

    3. Gently rub in circular motions with a soft cloth (like microfiber) for 30-60 seconds.

    4. Rinse and dry.

  • Note: This is a temporary fix and may not work for deep scratches.

2. Baking Soda Paste

  • A mild abrasive that can help buff out shallow scratches.

  • Steps:

    1. Mix 1 tbsp baking soda with 1 tbsp water to form a paste.

    2. Apply to the lens and rub gently with a soft cloth.

    3. Rinse thoroughly and dry.

3. Car Wax or Metal Polish (For Plastic Lenses)

  • Fills in minor scratches to reduce visibility.

  • Steps:

    1. Apply a small amount of car wax or metal polish (like Brasso) to the lens.

    2. Buff gently in circular motions.

    3. Wipe off excess with a clean cloth.

4. Eyeglass Scratch Repair Kit

  • Available online or at optical stores, these kits include polishing compounds and buffing pads.

  • Follow the manufacturer’s instructions carefully.

5. Professional Lens Polishing

  • If DIY methods don’t work, an optometrist or optical shop can professionally polish the lenses (if the scratches aren’t too deep).

  • For deep scratches, replacement may be the only option.

Prevention Tips:

  • Always store glasses in a protective case.

  • Clean lenses with microfiber cloths (not paper towels or clothing).

  • Avoid placing glasses face-down on hard surfaces.
