Anna Haining Bates: The Gentle Giant Who Made History 🌍👫

Standing at an astonishing 7 ft 11 in (2.41 m), Anna Haining Bates (née Swan) was one of the tallest women in recorded history—but her life was far more remarkable than just her height. Together with her equally towering husband, Martin Van Buren Bates (7 ft 9 in / 2.36 m), they became the world’s tallest married couple and lived a life that defied expectations in the 19th century.

Anna’s Early Life: A Canadian Giantess

  • Born August 6, 1846, in Nova Scotia, Canada, Anna was a normal-sized baby but began growing rapidly in childhood.

  • By age 15, she was over 7 feet tall—likely due to pituitary gigantism (like Robert Wadlow).

  • Despite her size, she was described as graceful, intelligent, and musical, playing the piano beautifully.

Fame with P.T. Barnum 🎪

  • In 1862, she joined P.T. Barnum’s American Museum in New York as a “living curiosity,” where she was treated with respect (unlike many sideshow performers).

  • She captivated audiences with her elegance and poise, earning enough to support her family.

Love and Marriage: Meeting Her Match ❤️

  • In 1871, Anna met Captain Martin Van Buren Bates, a 7 ft 9 in Civil War veteran known as the “Kentucky Giant.”

  • They married in 1871 in a spectacle wedding (her 12-foot-long dress was sewn by 16 seamstresses!).

  • Newspapers dubbed them the “World’s Tallest Couple,” and their love story fascinated the public.

Tragedy and Triumph

  • Their first child, a 23-pound baby girl, was born in 1872 but died shortly after birth.

  • In 1879, Anna gave birth to a 22-pound boy (the largest newborn ever recorded at the time), who also tragically passed.

  • Despite grief, the couple remained devoted, settling on a custom-built farm in Ohio with oversized furniture.

Legacy of the Gentle Giants

  • Anna died in 1888 at age 42 (likely due to complications from gigantism). Martin lived until 1919.

  • Their home, “The Giant’s House,” became a museum, showcasing their enormous beds, chairs, and doorways.

  • They hold the Guinness World Record for tallest married couple ever.

Why Anna’s Story Matters

Unlike many “human curiosities” of her time, Anna was educated, respected, and loved—a testament to her strength and charm in an era that often exploited differences.

Did you know? Anna’s wedding ring was so large it fit a quarter inside it! 💍
