- Total Time: 2 hours 10 minutes
Difficulty Level:
- Medium
Ingredients:
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast (1 packet)
- 1 cup warm milk (110°F/45°C)
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 1 large egg
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 cup warm water (110°F/45°C)
- 1 egg (for egg wash)
- Sesame seeds (optional)
Instructions:
- Activate the Yeast:
- In a small bowl, dissolve the sugar in the warm water. Sprinkle the yeast over the water and let it sit for about 5 minutes, until frothy.
- Prepare the Dough:
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt. Add the yeast mixture, warm milk, melted butter, and the egg. Mix until the dough begins to come together.
- Knead the Dough:
- Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for about 8-10 minutes, until the dough is smooth and elastic. Alternatively, you can use a stand mixer with a dough hook attachment.
- First Rise:
- Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until it has doubled in size.
- Shape the Buns:
- Punch down the dough to release the air. Divide the dough into 12 equal portions. Shape each portion into a ball and place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
- Second Rise:
- Cover the shaped buns with a clean kitchen towel and let them rise for another 30 minutes, until they have doubled in size.
- Preheat the Oven:
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Prepare the Egg Wash:
- In a small bowl, beat the egg with a tablespoon of water. Brush the tops of the buns with the egg wash. Sprinkle with sesame seeds if desired.
- Bake the Buns:
- Bake in the preheated oven for about 20 minutes, or until the buns are golden brown.
- Cool and Serve:
- Remove the buns from the oven and let them cool on a wire rack before serving.
