Half and Half Cake Recipe

Ingredients

For the Vanilla Cake:

  • 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 ½ teaspoons baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ½ cup milk

For the Chocolate Cake:

  • 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 ½ teaspoons baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ½ cup milk
  • ½ cup boiling water

Instructions

  1. Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. Make the Vanilla Cake:
    • In a bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
    • In a separate bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add the eggs one at a time, followed by the vanilla extract.
    • Gradually mix in the dry ingredients and milk until just combined. Divide the batter evenly between the prepared pans.
  3. Make the Chocolate Cake:
    • In another bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
    • In a separate bowl, cream the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla extract.
    • Gradually mix in the dry ingredients and milk, then add the boiling water and mix until smooth. Divide this batter evenly between the prepared pans.
  4. Bake the Cakes:
    • Bake both cakes in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
    • Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for 10 minutes before transferring them to wire racks to cool completely.
  5. Assemble the Cake:
    • Once cooled, you can layer the cakes alternately with frosting or serve them side by side for a half-and-half effect.
    • Frost with your favorite chocolate or vanilla frosting.
