Ingredients:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 cup cold unsalted butter, cubed
  • 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh chives or parsley
  • 3/4 cup milk
  • 1 large egg

Instructions:

  1. Preparation:
    • Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
    • Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Mixing Dry Ingredients:
    • In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt, black pepper, and garlic powder.
  3. Incorporating Butter:
    • Add the cubed butter to the dry ingredients.
    • Using a pastry cutter or your fingers, cut the butter into the flour mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs.
  4. Adding Cheese and Herbs:
    • Stir in the shredded cheese and chopped chives or parsley.
  5. Mixing Wet Ingredients:
    • In a separate bowl, whisk together the milk and egg until well combined.
  6. Combining Ingredients:
    • Make a well in the center of the dry ingredients and pour in the milk mixture.
    • Stir until just combined. Do not overmix.
  7. Shaping the Scones:
    • Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead gently a few times until it comes together.
    • Pat the dough into a 1-inch thick circle.
    • Cut the dough into 8 wedges and place them on the prepared baking sheet.
  8. Baking:
    • Bake in the preheated oven for 15-18 minutes, or until the scones are golden brown.
  9. Finishing:
    • Remove the scones from the oven and let them cool slightly on a wire rack before serving.
