This version is reminiscent of classic crumb cakes but with extra melty chocolate in every bite!

Chocolate Chip Crumb Cake

Makes a 9×9-inch cake

Crumb Topping Ingredients:

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour

  • ½ cup packed light brown sugar

  • ¼ cup granulated sugar

  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon

  • ½ cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, melted

  • ½ cup mini chocolate chips

Cake Ingredients:

  • 1½ cups all-purpose flour

  • ½ cup granulated sugar

  • 2 tsp baking powder

  • ¼ tsp salt

  • ½ cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, softened

  • 1 large egg

  • ½ cup milk (whole or 2%)

  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

  • ¾ cup mini chocolate chips

Optional Glaze (for extra sweetness):

  • ½ cup powdered sugar

  • 1–2 tbsp milk

  • ¼ tsp vanilla extract


Instructions:

1. Make the Crumb Topping:

  • In a bowl, mix flour, brown sugar, granulated sugar, and cinnamon.

  • Pour in melted butter and stir until crumbs form.

  • Mix in mini chocolate chips. Set aside.

2. Make the Cake Batter:

  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×9-inch baking pan (or line with parchment).

  • In a bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.

  • In another bowl, beat softened butter, egg, milk, and vanilla until smooth.

  • Gradually mix dry ingredients into wet until just combined (don’t overmix).

  • Fold in ¾ cup mini chocolate chips.

3. Assemble & Bake:

  • Spread batter evenly into the prepared pan.

  • Sprinkle crumb topping over the batter, pressing lightly so it sticks.

  • Bake for 35–40 minutes, until a toothpick comes out clean (avoid overbaking).

  • Cool for 15 minutes before adding glaze (if using).

4. Optional Glaze:

  • Whisk powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla until smooth. Drizzle over warm cake.


Tips for the Best Crumb Cake:

✔ Use mini chocolate chips—they distribute better and melt perfectly.
✔ Don’t overmix the batter to keep the cake tender.
✔ Press crumbs gently so they don’t sink into the cake while baking.
✔ Serve slightly warm for gooey chocolate pockets!
