Ingredients

  • For the Potatoes:
    • 4 large russet potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced
    • 1 medium onion, thinly sliced (optional)
    • 2 cups heavy cream
    • 2 cups shredded cheese (cheddar, Gruyère, or a mix)
    • 2 cloves garlic, minced
    • 1 tsp salt
    • ½ tsp black pepper
    • ½ tsp paprika (optional)
    • 1 tbsp fresh thyme or rosemary (optional)
  • For Topping:
    • ½ cup breadcrumbs (optional)
    • ¼ cup grated Parmesan cheese (optional)
    • 2 tbsp butter, melted

Instructions

  1. Preheat the Oven:
    • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Prepare the Baking Dish:
    • Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish with butter or cooking spray.
  3. Layer the Ingredients:
    • In a large bowl, combine the sliced potatoes, onion (if using), garlic, salt, pepper, and paprika. Toss to combine.
    • Layer half of the potato mixture in the prepared dish. Sprinkle half of the shredded cheese over the layer.
    • Add the remaining potato mixture and top with the remaining cheese.
  4. Add the Cream:
    • Pour the heavy cream evenly over the layered potatoes.
  5. Prepare the Topping:
    • In a small bowl, mix the breadcrumbs, Parmesan cheese, and melted butter. Sprinkle this mixture evenly over the top of the potatoes.
  6. Bake:
    • Cover the dish with foil and bake for 45 minutes. Then, remove the foil and bake for an additional 30-40 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender and the top is golden brown and bubbly.
  7. Cool and Serve:
    • Let the dish cool for a few minutes before serving. Enjoy your creamy au gratin potatoes!

These are perfect as a side dish for any meal!
