Crispy Homemade Onion Rings Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 2 large onions (yellow or sweet onions work well)
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 1 cup buttermilk (or regular milk)
  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs (Panko works well for extra crunch)
  • Oil for frying (vegetable or canola oil)

Instructions:

1. Prepare the Onions:

  • Slice the onions into 1/4-inch thick rings. Separate the rings and set them aside.

2. Make the Batter:

  • In a bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, garlic powder, paprika, salt, and pepper.
  • In another bowl, whisk together the buttermilk and egg until smooth.

3. Dredge the Onion Rings:

  • Dip each onion ring first into the flour mixture, then into the buttermilk mixture, and finally back into the flour mixture. Make sure each ring is well coated. For extra crunch, you can dip them in the buttermilk again and then coat with breadcrumbs.

4. Heat the Oil:

  • In a deep frying pan or pot, heat about 2 inches of oil over medium-high heat. You can test the oil by dropping in a small amount of batter; if it sizzles and rises to the top, the oil is ready.

5. Fry the Onion Rings:

  • Carefully place a few onion rings in the hot oil, avoiding overcrowding. Fry for about 2-4 minutes, or until golden brown and crispy.
  • Use a slotted spoon to remove the onion rings and transfer them to a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil. Sprinkle with salt while they’re still hot.

6. Serve:

  • Serve the crispy onion rings warm with your favorite dipping sauces, like ketchup, ranch, or barbecue sauce.
