Cubed Steak with Onion Gravy Recipe

Ingredients

  • 2-4 cubed steaks (about 1 lb total)
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour (for dredging)
  • 2-3 tablespoons vegetable oil or butter
  • 1 large onion, sliced
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder (optional)
  • Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Steak:
    • Season the cubed steaks with salt and pepper on both sides. Dredge each steak in flour, shaking off the excess.
  2. Brown the Steaks:
    • In a large skillet, heat the oil or butter over medium-high heat. Add the cubed steaks and cook for about 3-4 minutes on each side until browned. Remove the steaks from the skillet and set aside.
  3. Sauté the Onions:
    • In the same skillet, add the sliced onions. Cook for about 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the onions are soft and caramelized.
  4. Make the Gravy:
    • Sprinkle the remaining flour (about 2 tablespoons) over the onions and stir to combine. Gradually add the beef broth while stirring to avoid lumps. Add the Worcestershire sauce and garlic powder (if using). Bring to a simmer.
  5. Combine and Simmer:
    • Return the cubed steaks to the skillet, nestling them into the gravy. Cover and let simmer on low heat for about 15-20 minutes, or until the steaks are tender and the gravy has thickened.
  6. Serve:
    • Garnish with chopped parsley and serve hot over mashed potatoes, rice, or with crusty bread.
