French Butter Cake

Ingredients

  • 1 cup (225g) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 1/2 cups (300g) granulated sugar
  • 4 large eggs, at room temperature
  • 2 cups (250g) all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup (120ml) whole milk, at room temperature
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • Powdered sugar for dusting (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9-inch round or square cake pan, or line it with parchment paper.
  2. Cream the butter and sugar:
    • In a large mixing bowl, beat the softened butter and sugar together until light and fluffy (about 3-4 minutes).
  3. Add the eggs:
    • Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Scrape down the sides of the bowl as needed.
  4. Combine dry ingredients:
    • In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
  5. Alternate adding dry ingredients and milk:
    • Gradually add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture in three parts, alternating with the milk. Begin and end with the dry ingredients. Mix until just combined.
    • Stir in the vanilla extract.
  6. Bake the cake:
    • Pour the batter into the prepared cake pan and smooth the top with a spatula.
    • Bake for 35-40 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  7. Cool and serve:
    • Let the cake cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer it to a wire rack to cool completely.
    • Dust with powdered sugar before serving, if desired.

Tips

  • Room temperature ingredients: Ensure the butter, eggs, and milk are at room temperature for a smooth batter and even baking.
  • Flavor variations: Add lemon or orange zest for a citrusy twist, or a tablespoon of rum or brandy for extra depth.
  • Serving suggestion: Serve with fresh berries, whipped cream, or a dollop of crème fraîche for an elegant touch.

This French Butter Cake is a classic, simple, and utterly delicious dessert that’s sure to impress! 🧈🍰✨
