🧅🧄 French Onion Garlic Bread

The cozy, cheesy goodness of French onion soup meets the crispy, garlicky joy of garlic bread. This is the ultimate side dish for soups, salads, or pasta!

📝 Ingredients

For the Bread:

  • 1 large baguette or rustic loaf

  • ½ cup (1 stick / 115g) unsalted butter, softened

  • 4 garlic cloves, minced

  • 2 tbsp fresh parsley, finely chopped

  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce (secret umami boost!)

  • ½ tsp black pepper

For the French Onion Topping:

  • 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced

  • 2 tbsp butter or olive oil

  • 1 tsp fresh thyme leaves (or ½ tsp dried)

  • ½ cup beef broth (or vegetable broth)

  • 1 cup shredded Gruyère cheese (or Swiss, Mozzarella, or Provolone)

  • ¼ cup grated Parmesan cheese

  • Salt to taste

👩‍🍳 Instructions

1. Caramelize the Onions

  1. Melt 2 tbsp butter in a skillet over medium-low heat.

  2. Add sliced onions and cook slowly for 25–30 minutes, stirring occasionally, until deep golden brown and sweet.

  3. Add thyme and broth. Simmer until the liquid reduces. Season with salt. Set aside.

2. Prepare the Garlic Butter

  1. Mix softened butter, minced garlic, parsley, Worcestershire sauce, and black pepper.

3. Assemble the Bread

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).

  2. Slice the baguette in half lengthwise.

  3. Spread the garlic butter evenly on both cut sides.

  4. Top with the caramelized onions, then sprinkle with Gruyère and Parmesan.

4. Bake to Perfection

  1. Place on a baking sheet and bake for 12–15 minutes until the cheese is bubbly and golden.

  2. Optional: Broil for 1–2 minutes for extra browning (watch closely!).

5. Serve

  • Slice and serve immediately while hot and gooey!

💡 Pro Tips

  • Shortcut: Use store-bought caramelized onions or onion jam to save time.

  • Extra flavor: Add a splash of red wine or balsamic vinegar to the onions while cooking.

  • Make it ahead: Assemble the bread without baking, wrap in foil, and refrigerate. Bake when needed (+5 mins extra).

🍲 Serving Ideas

  • With steak, roast chicken, or soup (especially tomato or French onion!).

  • As an appetizer for game day or parties.

This bread is irresistibly savory, cheesy, and packed with deep onion flavor. Perfect for impressing guests or treating yourself! 😋
