Caramelize the onions:
-
Heat butter and olive oil in a skillet over medium-low heat.

Add sliced onions, cooking slowly for 20-25 mins, stirring occasionally, until golden brown and sweet.
-
Stir in Worcestershire sauce and a pinch of salt. Set aside.
-
-
Make the patties:
-
In a bowl, mix ground beef with French onion soup mix (or seasoning blend).
-
Form into 4 equal patties, pressing a slight dimple in the center to prevent bulging.
-
-
Cook the burgers:
-
Grill or pan-sear over medium-high heat for 4-5 mins per side (or until desired doneness).
-
In the last minute, top each patty with Gruyère cheese and let melt.
-
-
Assemble the burgers:
-
Spread garlic mayo (if using) on toasted buns.
-
Place the cheesy patty on the bottom bun, then pile on caramelized onions.
-
Garnish with fresh thyme or arugula, then top with the bun.
-
-
Serve hot with extra onions on the side and a pickle spear!
Homemade French Onion Seasoning Blend (if not using a packet):
-
1 tbsp beef bouillon powder
-
1 tsp onion powder
-
½ tsp garlic powder

¼ tsp black pepper
Serving Suggestion:
