Fried Fish with Rice Gravy Recipe

Ingredients

For the Fried Fish:

  • 4 fish fillets (catfish, tilapia, or your choice)
  • 1 cup buttermilk (or milk with 1 tbsp vinegar added)
  • 1 cup cornmeal
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp onion powder
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • Vegetable oil (for frying)

For the Rice Gravy:

  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil or butter
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups chicken or fish broth
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • Cooked rice (for serving)

Instructions

  1. Marinate the Fish:
    • Place the fish fillets in a bowl and cover them with buttermilk. Let them marinate for at least 30 minutes.
  2. Prepare the Coating:
    • In a shallow dish, combine cornmeal, flour, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Mix well.
  3. Fry the Fish:
    • Heat about 1 inch of vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C).
    • Remove the fish from the buttermilk, allowing excess to drip off. Dredge each fillet in the cornmeal mixture, pressing lightly to coat.
    • Carefully place the fillets in the hot oil and fry for about 3-5 minutes per side until golden brown and cooked through. Remove and drain on paper towels.
  4. Make the Rice Gravy:
    • In a saucepan, heat the oil or butter over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and cook until translucent, about 5 minutes.
    • Stir in the minced garlic and cook for another minute.
    • Whisk in the flour to make a roux, cooking for about 2-3 minutes until golden brown.
    • Gradually add the broth while whisking to prevent lumps. Bring to a simmer and cook until thickened, about 5-7 minutes. Season with salt and pepper.
  5. Serve:
    • Serve the fried fish over a bed of cooked rice, generously topped with the gravy.

Enjoy!

This comforting dish combines crispy fish with savory gravy, making it a delicious meal. Enjoy!
