Here’s a classic recipe for delicious fried green tomatoes—a Southern favorite!

Fried Green Tomatoes Recipe

Ingredients

  • 3-4 medium green tomatoes, sliced (about 1/4 inch thick)
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 1 cup buttermilk (or regular milk)
  • 1 cup cornmeal
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 tsp paprika (optional)
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder (optional)
  • Oil for frying (vegetable or peanut oil)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Tomatoes:
    • Slice the green tomatoes and sprinkle both sides with salt. Let them sit for about 10-15 minutes to draw out excess moisture. Pat dry with paper towels.
  2. Set Up Dredging Stations:
    • In one bowl, pour the buttermilk. In another bowl, mix the cornmeal, flour, paprika, garlic powder, and a bit of salt and pepper.
  3. Coat the Tomatoes:
    • Dip each tomato slice first in the buttermilk, allowing excess to drip off. Then dredge it in the cornmeal mixture, pressing lightly to adhere.
  4. Heat the Oil:
    • In a large skillet, heat about 1/4 inch of oil over medium heat until hot (around 350°F or 175°C).
  5. Fry the Tomatoes:
    • Carefully place the coated tomato slices in the hot oil, working in batches if necessary. Fry for about 3-4 minutes on each side, or until golden brown and crispy.
  6. Drain:
    • Remove the fried tomatoes and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
  7. Serve:
    • Enjoy hot, with your favorite dipping sauce or as a side dish!
