Grape-Nuts Custard

Prep Time: 10 mins | Cook Time: 45-50 mins | Total Time: ~1 hour (+ cooling)
Servings: 6

Ingredients:

  • ½ cup Grape-Nuts cereal

  • 4 large eggs

  • ½ cup granulated sugar

  • ¼ tsp salt

  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

  • ½ tsp ground cinnamon (optional)

  • 2½ cups whole milk (or half-and-half for extra richness)

  • ¼ cup raisins (optional)

  • Whipped cream or nutmeg for garnish (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly grease a 1.5-quart baking dish or 8×8-inch pan.

  2. Soak Grape-Nuts: Sprinkle cereal evenly in the dish. If using raisins, scatter them over the cereal.

  3. Mix custard base:

    • In a bowl, whisk eggs, sugar, salt, vanilla, and cinnamon until smooth.

    • Gradually whisk in milk until fully combined.

  4. Assemble: Slowly pour the custard mixture over the Grape-Nuts (they’ll float—this is normal).

  5. Bake: Place the dish in a larger pan and fill the outer pan with hot water (for a bain-marie).

    • Bake 45–50 minutes until the custard is set (a knife inserted near the center should come out clean).

  6. Cool & serve: Let rest 10–15 minutes. Serve warm or chilled, topped with whipped cream or a dusting of nutmeg.

Tips:

  • Make ahead: Refrigerate overnight for a firmer texture.

  • Variations: Swap raisins for chopped dates or add a drizzle of maple syrup.

  • Dairy-free? Use almond or oat milk (may be less creamy).

This old-fashioned dessert is like a cross between bread pudding and flan—hearty, nostalgic, and delicious! Enjoy! 😊
