Hanky Panky Bites
Hanky Panky Bites are bite-sized appetizers that are perfect for parties, gatherings, or any casual get-together. These tasty little treats feature a savory combination of sausage, cheese, and seasoning served on a crispy toast. They’re easy to make and always a hit with guests!
Ingredients:
- 1 lb (16 oz) ground sausage (breakfast sausage or Italian sausage works well)
- 1/2 cup grated sharp cheddar cheese (or American cheese)
- 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
- 1/4 cup finely chopped green onions (optional)
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
- 1 loaf of cocktail rye bread (or any small square bread)
- 1 tablespoon butter (for toasting the bread)
- Parsley for garnish (optional)
Instructions:
1. Prepare the Sausage Mixture:
- In a skillet over medium heat, cook the ground sausage until fully browned, breaking it apart with a spoon as it cooks.
- Once cooked, drain any excess fat and return the sausage to the pan.
- Add the Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, green onions (if using), cheddar cheese, and Parmesan cheese. Stir until the cheese melts and the mixture is well combined. Set aside to cool slightly.
2. Toast the Rye Bread:
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Butter the cocktail rye bread slices lightly on one side.
- Place the bread on a baking sheet, buttered side up, and bake for 5-7 minutes or until the bread is toasted and golden.
3. Assemble the Hanky Panky Bites:
- Once the bread is toasted, remove it from the oven and spoon the sausage mixture onto each piece of toasted bread.
- You want to add enough of the mixture to cover the bread but not too much that it spills over.
4. Bake the Bites:
- Return the bread with the sausage mixture to the oven and bake for an additional 5-7 minutes, or until the topping is bubbly and golden.
5. Serve:
- Remove from the oven and let them cool for a couple of minutes.
- Garnish with parsley (optional) for a pop of color.
- Serve hot as an appetizer or snack.
Tips:
- You can make these ahead of time: Prepare the bites, store them in the fridge, and then bake when you’re ready to serve.
- For an extra flavor twist, you can add a little bit of hot sauce or crushed red pepper flakes to the sausage mixture for heat.
- These can be made using a variety of bread—try using mini baguette slices or even crackers for a different crunch!
These Hanky Panky Bites are cheesy, savory, and absolutely irresistible! Perfect for any occasion where you need a quick and satisfying appetizer.
