Here are the reasons why your orchid is dying

Posted on June 27, 2025

If your orchid is struggling or dying, several common issues could be to blame. Here are the top reasons and how to fix them:

Table of Contents

Toggle
  • 🌿 1. Overwatering (Root Rot)
  • 💧 2. Underwatering (Dehydration)
  • ☀️ 3. Incorrect Light
  • 🌡️ 4. Temperature Stress
  • 🌸 5. No Blooms (Dormancy Issues)
  • 🐛 6. Pests or Disease
  • Quick Revival Tips:

🌿 1. Overwatering (Root Rot)

  • Signs: Yellow, mushy leaves; black/brown roots; foul smell.

  • Fix:

    • Stop watering and let the potting mix dry out.

    • Trim rotten roots with sterilized scissors.

    • Repot in fresh orchid bark mix (never regular soil).

    • Water only when roots turn silvery (about once a week).

💧 2. Underwatering (Dehydration)

  • Signs: Wrinkled, limp leaves; dry, shriveled roots.

  • Fix:

    • Soak the pot in lukewarm water for 10–15 minutes, then drain completely.

    • Increase humidity with a pebble tray or humidifier.

☀️ 3. Incorrect Light

  • Signs:

    • Too much light: Burnt, bleached leaves.

    • Too little light: Dark green leaves, no blooms.

  • Fix:

    • Provide bright, indirect light (east-facing window ideal).

    • Avoid direct sun (south/west windows need sheer curtains).

🌡️ 4. Temperature Stress

  • Signs: Bud drop, wilting, or leaf discoloration.

  • Fix:

    • Keep temps between 65–80°F (18–27°C).

    • Avoid drafts, AC vents, or sudden temperature swings.

🌸 5. No Blooms (Dormancy Issues)

  • Signs: Healthy leaves but no flowers for over a year.

  • Fix:

    • Give the orchid a 2–4 week “cool period” (55–65°F at night).

    • Use a balanced orchid fertilizer (20-20-20) monthly.

🐛 6. Pests or Disease

  • Common Culprits: Mealybugs, spider mites, scale.

  • Fix:

    • Wipe leaves with rubbing alcohol (70%).

    • Spray with neem oil or insecticidal soap.

Quick Revival Tips:

✔ Repot every 1–2 years (old mix breaks down and suffocates roots).
✔ Use clear pots to monitor root health.
✔ Mist aerial roots lightly if your home is dry.
