Jamaican Steamed Cabbage

Jamaican Cabbage (Steamed & Sautéed) 🌴🔥

A vibrant, slightly spicy side dish that pairs perfectly with jerk chicken, curry goat, or rice and peas! Quick, flavorful, and packed with Caribbean flair.


Ingredients (Serves 4–6)

  • 1 small green cabbage, thinly sliced

  • 3 tsp olive oil

  • 1 tbsp butter (or coconut oil for vegan option)

  • ½ sweet onion, diced

  • 3 garlic cloves, minced

  • 1 red bell pepper, diced

  • 1 cup shredded carrot

  • 1 jalapeño or habanero, finely diced (adjust for heat!)

  • 3 green onions, chopped

  • Seasonings:

    • 1 tsp thyme (fresh or dried)

    • ½ tsp allspice (key for Jamaican flavor!)

    • ½ tsp black pepper

    • ½ tsp salt (or to taste)

    • 1 tbsp soy sauce or liquid aminos (optional, for umami)


Instructions

1️⃣ Prep Veggies:

  • Thinly slice cabbage (like coleslaw). Dice onion, bell pepper, and hot pepper. Mince garlic.

2️⃣ Sauté Aromatics:

  • Heat oil + butter in a large skillet/wok over medium heat.

  • Add onion, garlic, and hot pepper. Sauté 2 mins until fragrant.

3️⃣ Add Veggies:

  • Toss in bell pepper, carrot, and green onions. Cook 3 mins.

  • Stir in thyme, allspice, black pepper, and salt.

4️⃣ Steam the Cabbage:

  • Add cabbage and soy sauce (if using). Stir well.

  • Cover and steam 5–7 mins, stirring occasionally, until cabbage is tender but still crisp.

5️⃣ Finish & Serve:

  • Uncover, taste and adjust salt/spice. Garnish with extra green onions.


Serving Ideas

  • Pair with: Jerk chicken, oxtail stew, or fried plantains.

  • Make it a meal: Add sautéed shrimp or tofu for protein!
