Körözött (Hungarian Paprika Cheese Spread) 🇭🇺🧀

A smoky, creamy, and slightly spicy Hungarian cheese spread made with cottage cheese, paprika, and caraway. Perfect on bread, crackers, or veggies!

Ingredients (Serves 6–8)

  • 250g (9 oz) dry cottage cheese (túró or farmer’s cheese)

  • 100g (3.5 oz) unsalted butter, softened

  • 1 tbsp sweet paprika (essential! Hungarian if possible)

  • 1 tsp caraway seeds, crushed (or ground caraway)

  • 1 small red onion, finely minced (or 2 tbsp onion powder)

  • 1 tsp mustard (optional, for tang)

  • Salt & pepper to taste

  • 2–3 tbsp sour cream (or plain yogurt, for creaminess)

(For a smoother texture, blend in a food processor.)

Instructions

  1. Mix the Base:

    • In a bowl, mash cottage cheese and butter until smooth.

    • Add paprika, caraway, onion, mustard, salt, and pepper. Mix well.

    • Stir in sour cream until creamy (adjust thickness as needed).

  2. Chill & Serve:

    • Cover and refrigerate for 1–2 hours to let flavors meld.

    • Garnish with extra paprika and caraway seeds.

Serving Ideas

🍞 Spread on rye bread, baguette, or crackers.
🥒 Pair with radishes, pickles, or bell peppers.
🍺 Enjoy with Hungarian beer or dry white wine.

Why It’s Special

✨ Authentic Hungarian flavor—popular at gatherings and holidays.
✨ Vegetarian-friendly and gluten-free (check bread/cracker labels).
✨ Easy to customize—add smoked paprika, garlic, or chives.

Pro Tip: For a smokier version, use hot paprika or a dash of liquid smoke.

Storage

  • Keeps for 3–4 days in the fridge.

  • Freezes well (thaw overnight before serving).

Want a vegan version (with tofu or cashews)? 😊 Let me know!
