What is Mississippi Sin Dip?

It’s a hot dip made with a base of cream cheese and sour cream, loaded with cheese, ham (or other meats), and green onions, all baked until bubbly. It’s called “sin” because it’s so rich and indulgent.

The classic vessel for serving it is a hollowed-out round bread loaf (like a sourdough or Hawaiian bread bowl), with the torn bread pieces used for dipping.

Classic Mississippi Sin Dip Recipe

This is the traditional version that made the dip famous.

Ingredients:

  • 1 (8 oz) block cream cheese, softened

  • 1 cup sour cream

  • 1 ½ cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese

  • 1 (2.5 oz) package real bacon bits or ½ cup cooked, crumbled bacon

  • 1 cup diced cooked ham (or use ½ cup diced ham and the bacon)

  • ½ cup chopped green onions

  • 1 (4 oz) can diced green chiles, drained (optional for a little heat)

  • 2-3 dashes of hot sauce (like Tabasco) (optional)

  • 1 large round bread loaf (sourdough or Hawaiian work best)

  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions:

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

  2. Mix Ingredients: In a medium bowl, beat the softened cream cheese and sour cream until smooth with a hand mixer or by hand. Stir in the cheddar cheese, ham, bacon, green onions, green chiles, and hot sauce. Mix until everything is well combined. Season with a little salt and pepper.

  3. Prepare the Bread Bowl: Slice the top third off the round bread loaf. Hollow out the bottom part of the loaf, tearing the removed bread into bite-sized pieces for dipping. You can also hollow out the top part to create a “lid.”

  4. Assemble and Bake: Spoon the dip mixture into the hollowed-out bread bowl. Place the filled bread bowl on a baking sheet. If you have a “lid,” you can place it beside the bowl on the sheet. Bake for 45-60 minutes, or until the dip is hot, bubbly, and lightly golden on top.

  5. Serve: Carefully remove from the oven (the bread bowl will be hot!). Serve immediately with the reserved bread pieces, crackers, tortilla chips, or vegetable sticks for dipping.

Popular Variations & Shortcuts:

The beauty of this dip is its flexibility. Here are some common twists:

  • Spicy Version: Use Pepper Jack cheese instead of cheddar and add a can of diced jalapeños (drained) instead of green chiles.

  • Italian Version: Use Italian sausage (cooked and crumbled) instead of ham and bacon. Add a teaspoon of Italian seasoning and use a mozzarella and Parmesan cheese blend.

  • Buffalo Chicken Version: Use 1-2 cups of shredded rotisserie chicken mixed with ½ cup of buffalo sauce instead of the ham and bacon. Use a ranch seasoning packet for extra flavor.

  • Crockpot Method: Mix all ingredients and add them to a slow cooker. Cook on LOW for 2-3 hours, stirring occasionally, until hot and melted. Serve with dippers on the side.

  • Easy Bake: Don’t want to deal with a bread bowl? Simply spread the dip mixture into an 8×8-inch baking dish and bake for 20-25 minutes until bubbly.

No matter how you make it, it’s called “Sin” for a reason—it’s irresistibly delicious! Enjoy.
