Old Fashioned Egg Custard Pie

Ingredients:

For the Pie Crust:

  • 1 unbaked 9-inch pie crust (store-bought or homemade)

For the Custard Filling:

  • 3 large eggs
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt (optional for balance)
  • Ground nutmeg (for sprinkling on top)

Instructions:

1. Preheat the Oven:

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

2. Prepare the Pie Crust:

  • Place the unbaked pie crust into a 9-inch pie dish. If you’re using a store-bought crust, just place it directly into the dish and crimp the edges. If you’re using a homemade crust, roll it out and fit it into the pie dish, then crimp the edges.
  • Prick the bottom of the pie crust a few times with a fork to prevent bubbling during baking.

3. Make the Custard Filling:

  • In a large bowl, whisk the eggs and granulated sugar together until smooth and well combined.
  • Gradually whisk in the whole milk and vanilla extract until the mixture is smooth.
  • Add a pinch of salt (optional), which will help balance the sweetness.

4. Pour Custard Into Pie Crust:

  • Carefully pour the custard filling into the prepared pie crust. The custard will be thin, but don’t worry—it will set as it bakes.

5. Add Nutmeg:

  • Lightly sprinkle ground nutmeg over the top of the custard. This gives it that signature old-fashioned touch and adds a lovely flavor to the pie.

6. Bake the Pie:

  • Place the pie in the oven and bake for 45-50 minutes, or until the custard is set and the center no longer jiggles when you gently shake the pie. You can test it by inserting a knife into the center—if it comes out clean, the pie is done.
  • If the edges of the crust begin to brown too much before the custard sets, cover the crust edges with foil to prevent over-baking.

7. Cool and Serve:

  • Once baked, remove the pie from the oven and let it cool to room temperature. The custard will firm up as it cools.
  • Slice the pie and serve it as is, or top it with some whipped cream if you’d like.
