Yes, Professor Liviu Librescu is remembered as a hero for his extraordinary act of bravery during the Virginia Tech shooting on April 16, 2007 — the deadliest school shooting in U.S. history.
Librescu, a Holocaust survivor and aeronautical engineering professor, was teaching in Norris Hall when the gunman began his rampage. As shots rang out, Librescu blocked the classroom door with his own body, giving his students time to escape through the windows. He was shot and killed, but 22 of his students survived because of his sacrifice.
He was 76 years old.
Librescu’s story of courage and selflessness captured the world’s attention. His heroic final act was especially poignant considering his survival of both the Nazi regime and later the Communist regime in Romania, only to give his life protecting others in a new homeland.
