Open-Faced Sloppy Joe Melts Recipe

Ingredients

  • For the Sloppy Joe Filling:
    • 1 lb ground beef (or turkey)
    • 1 small onion, finely chopped
    • 1/2 bell pepper, finely chopped
    • 1 cup ketchup
    • 2 tbsp brown sugar
    • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
    • 1 tsp garlic powder
    • 1/2 tsp chili powder (optional)
    • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • For the Melts:
    • 4 slices of thick bread (like Texas toast or sourdough)
    • 1 cup shredded cheese (cheddar, mozzarella, or your choice)
    • Fresh parsley or green onions (for garnish, optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Sloppy Joe Filling:
    • In a large skillet over medium heat, brown the ground beef, breaking it apart with a spoon. Drain any excess fat.
    • Add the chopped onion and bell pepper, cooking until softened (about 3-4 minutes).
    • Stir in the ketchup, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, chili powder (if using), salt, and pepper. Simmer for about 5-10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until heated through.
  2. Toast the Bread:
    • While the filling is simmering, preheat your broiler. Place the bread slices on a baking sheet and toast under the broiler for a few minutes until golden brown. Keep an eye on them to prevent burning.
  3. Assemble the Melts:
    • Spoon the sloppy joe mixture generously over each slice of toasted bread. Top with shredded cheese.
  4. Melt the Cheese:
    • Return the baking sheet to the broiler for a few minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
  5. Serve:
    • Remove from the oven, garnish with fresh parsley or green onions if desired, and serve warm.
