Salisbury Steak with Mashed Potatoes and Mushroom Gravy

Ingredients

For the Salisbury Steak:

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1/4 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1/4 cup onion, finely chopped
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 2 tbsp olive oil (for frying)

For the Mushroom Gravy:

  • 1 cup mushrooms, sliced (button or cremini)
  • 1/4 cup onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 2 tbsp flour
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 1 tsp thyme (optional)

For the Mashed Potatoes:

  • 2 lbs potatoes, peeled and cubed
  • 1/2 cup milk (or more, to taste)
  • 1/4 cup butter
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Salisbury Steak:
    • In a bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, onion, egg, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Mix until just combined.
    • Shape the mixture into oval patties.
  2. Cook the Steaks:
    • In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add the patties and cook for about 4-5 minutes on each side until browned. Remove the patties from the skillet and set aside.
  3. Make the Mushroom Gravy:
    • In the same skillet, add the chopped onions and sliced mushrooms. Sauté until the onions are translucent and the mushrooms are softened, about 5 minutes.
    • Sprinkle flour over the mixture and stir well. Cook for about 1 minute.
    • Gradually add the beef broth while stirring to prevent lumps. Add Worcestershire sauce, salt, pepper, and thyme (if using). Bring to a simmer and cook until the gravy thickens, about 5-7 minutes.
    • Return the cooked patties to the skillet, spooning some gravy over them. Let them simmer in the gravy for a few minutes to heat through.
  4. Prepare the Mashed Potatoes:
    • While the gravy is cooking, boil the cubed potatoes in a large pot of salted water until tender, about 15-20 minutes.
    • Drain the potatoes and return them to the pot. Add milk, butter, salt, and pepper. Mash until smooth and creamy, adjusting the milk as needed for desired consistency.
  5. Serve:
    • Serve the Salisbury steaks over a generous scoop of mashed potatoes, topped with mushroom gravy.

Enjoy!

This comforting dish is perfect for a cozy dinner. Enjoy every delicious bite!
