Shrimp Dirty Rice Recipe

Serves: 6-8
Prep Time: 15 mins | Cook Time: 30 mins

Ingredients:

  • 1 lb hamburger meat (ground beef)

  • 1 lb ground pork sausage (spicy or mild)

  • 10-12 shrimp, peeled, tail-off, deveined (chopped if large)

  • 4 cups cooked rice (white or brown, day-old works best)

  • 2 cups chicken broth (or “Better Than Bouillon” chicken)

  • 1.5 cups onion & bell pepper mix (diced)

  • 3 tbsp vegetable oil, divided

  • 1 tsp seafood seasoning (like Old Bay or Cajun seasoning)

  • (Optional) 2 cloves garlic, minced

  • (Optional) ½ tsp paprika or Cajun seasoning for extra heat

  • Salt & pepper to taste

Instructions:

1️⃣ Cook the Meat:

  • Heat 1 tbsp oil in a large skillet or Dutch oven over medium-high heat.

  • Brown the ground beef and sausage, breaking it into small pieces. Cook until no pink remains (~6-8 mins). Drain excess fat if needed.

2️⃣ Sauté Vegetables:

  • Push meat to one side, add 1 tbsp oil, then sauté onions & bell peppers until soft (~4 mins).

  • (Optional) Add garlic and cook for 30 seconds until fragrant.

3️⃣ Add Shrimp & Seasonings:

  • Stir in shrimp and seafood seasoning. Cook until shrimp turns pink (~2-3 mins). Remove mixture and set aside.

4️⃣ Toast the Rice:

  • In the same pan, heat 1 tbsp oil and add cooked rice. Stir-fry for 2-3 mins to lightly toast.

5️⃣ Combine & Simmer:

  • Return meat and shrimp mixture to the pan. Pour in broth, stirring well.

  • Reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for 5-7 mins until liquid is absorbed.

6️⃣ Season & Serve:

  • Taste and adjust salt/pepper or extra Cajun seasoning if desired.

  • Garnish with green onions or parsley.

Tips:

✔️ For extra flavor, use Andouille sausage instead of plain pork sausage.
✔️ If using uncooked rice, simmer with 3 cups broth until rice is tender (~20 mins).
✔️ Add diced celery for a classic “Holy Trinity” veggie base.

Enjoy your Shrimp Dirty Rice as a hearty one-pot meal! 🍤🍚🔥
