Ingredients:

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 ¼ teaspoons active dry yeast (1 packet)
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup warm water (110°F/45°C)
  • ¼ cup unsalted butter, softened
  • ¼ cup milk (whole or 2%)

Instructions:

1. Activate the Yeast:

  1. In a small bowl, combine the warm water (about 110°F or 45°C) and sugar. Stir until the sugar dissolves.
  2. Sprinkle the active dry yeast over the warm water and stir gently. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy and bubbly. This step is crucial for activating the yeast.

2. Prepare the Dough:

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt.
  2. Add the frothy yeast mixture to the flour and salt, followed by the softened butter and milk.
  3. Stir everything together until it forms a dough. You can use a wooden spoon or your hands to bring it together.

3. Knead the Dough:

  1. Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface and knead it for about 8-10 minutes, until the dough is smooth, elastic, and no longer sticky. If it’s too sticky, add a little more flour, a tablespoon at a time.

4. Let the Dough Rise:

  1. Shape the dough into a ball and place it in a lightly greased bowl. Cover the bowl with a clean kitchen towel or plastic wrap.
  2. Let the dough rise in a warm place for 1-1 ½ hours, or until it has doubled in size.

5. Shape the Loaf:

  1. Once the dough has risen, punch it down to release any air bubbles.
  2. Transfer the dough to a floured surface and gently shape it into a loaf. Roll it into a cylinder shape and tuck the edges underneath to form a smooth loaf.
  3. Place the shaped dough into a greased 9×5-inch loaf pan.

6. Second Rise:

  1. Cover the loaf with a clean towel or plastic wrap and let it rise for another 30-45 minutes, until it has risen slightly above the edge of the loaf pan.

7. Bake the Loaf:

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) while the dough is rising.
  2. Once the dough has finished its second rise, place the loaf pan in the preheated oven.
  3. Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the loaf sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.

8. Cool and Serve:

  1. Remove the loaf from the oven and let it cool in the pan for about 5 minutes.
  2. Turn the loaf out onto a wire rack to cool completely before slicing.

Tips and Variations:

  • Butter Glaze: For a soft, buttery crust, you can brush the top of the loaf with melted butter right after baking.
  • Add-ins: Try adding ½ cup of shredded cheese or herbs (like rosemary) to the dough for added flavor.
  • Storage: Store the loaf in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3-4 days. You can also freeze slices for up to 3 months.

This Soft Loaf is perfect for making sandwiches, toasts, or just enjoying with butter and jam. Enjoy the light, fluffy texture and fresh-baked goodness! Would you like more bread recipes or any modifications to this one? 😊
