Here’s a delightful recipe for sourdough cinnamon rolls with glaze that combines the tanginess of sourdough with the sweetness of cinnamon and a creamy glaze!

Sourdough Cinnamon Rolls Recipe

Ingredients

For the Dough:

  • 1 cup active sourdough starter (fed and bubbly)
  • 1/2 cup milk (warm)
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 large egg
  • 3 1/2 to 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp salt

For the Filling:

  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 2 tbsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened

For the Glaze:

  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 2-3 tbsp milk
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Dough:
    • In a large mixing bowl, combine the sourdough starter, warm milk, sugar, melted butter, and egg. Mix well.
    • Gradually add 3 1/2 cups of flour and salt. Stir until a dough forms. If the dough is too sticky, add more flour, a little at a time, until manageable.
  2. Knead and Rise:
    • Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5-7 minutes until smooth. Place it in a greased bowl, cover, and let it rise in a warm place for 4-6 hours, or until doubled in size.
  3. Prepare the Filling:
    • In a small bowl, mix together the brown sugar and cinnamon. Set aside.
  4. Shape the Rolls:
    • Once the dough has risen, punch it down and roll it out on a floured surface into a rectangle (about 16×12 inches).
    • Spread the softened butter over the dough, then sprinkle the cinnamon-sugar mixture evenly on top.
  5. Roll and Cut:
    • Starting from the long edge, roll the dough tightly into a log. Cut into 12 equal pieces and place them in a greased baking dish.
  6. Second Rise:
    • Cover the rolls and let them rise for another 1-2 hours, or until puffy.
  7. Preheat the Oven:
    • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  8. Bake the Rolls:
    • Bake the rolls for 25-30 minutes, or until golden brown. Remove from the oven and let cool slightly.
  9. Make the Glaze:
    • In a small bowl, whisk together the powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract until smooth. Adjust the consistency with more milk or sugar as needed.
  10. Glaze the Rolls:
    • Drizzle the glaze over the warm cinnamon rolls.
