Sourdough Whole Wheat Crackers Recipe

Ingredients

  • 1 cup whole wheat flour
  • 1/2 cup sourdough starter (active and bubbly)
  • 1/4 cup olive oil (or melted butter)
  • 1/2 tsp salt (plus more for sprinkling)
  • 1/4 tsp garlic powder (optional)
  • 1/4 tsp onion powder (optional)
  • Fresh herbs (like rosemary or thyme), optional

Instructions

  1. Preheat the Oven:
    • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Mix the Dough:
    • In a large bowl, combine the whole wheat flour, sourdough starter, olive oil, salt, and any optional seasonings or herbs. Mix until a dough forms.
  3. Roll Out the Dough:
    • Place the dough on a lightly floured surface. Roll it out as thin as possible (about 1/8 inch thick) for crispier crackers.
  4. Cut the Crackers:
    • Use a knife or pizza cutter to cut the rolled-out dough into desired shapes (squares or rectangles). Transfer them to the prepared baking sheet.
  5. Add Toppings:
    • Sprinkle the tops with a little extra salt and any additional herbs or spices you like.
  6. Bake:
    • Bake in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes, or until the edges are golden and the crackers are crisp. Keep an eye on them to prevent burning.
  7. Cool:
    • Once baked, remove the crackers from the oven and let them cool completely on a wire rack. They will continue to crisp up as they cool.
  8. Store:
    • Store the cooled crackers in an airtight container for up to a week.
