PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — A new gun law is now on the books in Philadelphia.
The purpose is to crack down on so-called straw purchases, which is when someone with a clean record buys a gun for someone else who cannot legally do so on their own.
Mayor Cherelle Parker was joined by Philadelphia Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel, as well as city leaders, as she signed the “Straw Purchase Warning Sign Ordinance” on Monday.
It requires all firearms dealers to post bright orange signs that remind customers of the fines they face if they commit a straw purchase.
Punishment includes up to 10 years behind bars and a quarter-million dollar fine.
Gun dealers who don’t post these warnings could eventually be fined $2,000 a day.
