Stuffed Cabbage Rolls
Ingredients:
For the Cabbage Rolls:
- 1 large head of cabbage
- 1 lb ground beef (or a mix of beef and pork)
- 1 cup cooked rice (white or brown)
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 egg, beaten
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- 1 teaspoon dried thyme (or other herbs)
For the Sauce:
- 1 can (15 oz) tomato sauce
- 1 can (14.5 oz) diced tomatoes (with juices)
- 1 tablespoon brown sugar (optional)
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions:
- Prepare the Cabbage:
- Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Carefully remove the core from the cabbage and place the whole head in the boiling water for about 2-3 minutes, or until the outer leaves are pliable. Remove the cabbage and let it cool slightly. Carefully peel off about 12 leaves.
- Make the Filling:
- In a large bowl, combine the ground meat, cooked rice, chopped onion, minced garlic, beaten egg, salt, pepper, paprika, and thyme. Mix until well combined.
- Stuff the Cabbage Rolls:
- Lay a cabbage leaf on a flat surface. Place about 2-3 tablespoons of the filling near the base of the leaf. Fold in the sides and roll it up tightly. Repeat with the remaining leaves and filling.
- Prepare the Sauce:
- In a mixing bowl, combine the tomato sauce, diced tomatoes, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, oregano, salt, and pepper.
- Assemble in Baking Dish:
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Spread a small amount of the sauce on the bottom of a baking dish. Arrange the stuffed cabbage rolls seam-side down in the dish, packing them tightly. Pour the remaining sauce over the rolls.
- Bake:
- Cover the baking dish with foil and bake for about 1 hour. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes, until the cabbage is tender.
- Serve:
- Allow the rolls to cool slightly before serving. Enjoy them with extra sauce on top!
Tips:
- Freezing: These cabbage rolls freeze well. Assemble them and freeze before baking, then cook from frozen, adding extra time to the baking.
- Variations: You can add chopped bell peppers or mushrooms to the filling for added flavor and nutrition.
Enjoy your delicious stuffed cabbage rolls!
