Swedish Apple Buns Recipe

Ingredients

For the Dough:

  • 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 2 1/2 tsp instant yeast
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup milk, warmed
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 large egg

For the Filling:

  • 2 medium apples, peeled, cored, and sliced thinly
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • 1/4 cup raisins or currants (optional)

For the Topping:

  • 1/4 cup sliced almonds (optional)
  • 1 tbsp butter, melted
  • Powdered sugar (for dusting, optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Dough:
    • In a large bowl, combine the flour, sugar, yeast, and salt. In a separate bowl, mix the warm milk, melted butter, and egg. Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and knead until a smooth dough forms. Let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
  2. Prepare the Filling:
    • In a bowl, mix the sliced apples with sugar, cinnamon, lemon juice, and raisins or currants if using. Set aside.
  3. Assemble the Buns:
    • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Roll out the dough on a floured surface into a rectangle (about 1/4 inch thick).
    • Spread the apple filling evenly over the dough. Roll the dough tightly from one long side to the other, then slice into 1-inch pieces.
  4. Bake the Buns:
    • Place the buns in a greased baking dish, cut side up. Brush the tops with melted butter and sprinkle with sliced almonds. Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until golden brown.
  5. Serve:
    • Let the buns cool slightly before dusting with powdered sugar, if desired. Serve warm.

Enjoy!

These Swedish Apple Buns are soft, fragrant, and perfect with a cup of tea or coffee. Enjoy every delicious bite!
