Sweet and Salty Churro Bites

Ingredients:

For the Churro Bites:

  • 1 cup water
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 large eggs
  • Vegetable oil (for frying)

For the Coating:

  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon sea salt (or flaky salt for a stronger salty taste)

Instructions:

1. Prepare the dough:

  • In a medium saucepan, combine the water, butter, sugar, and salt. Bring the mixture to a boil over medium heat.
  • Once it starts boiling, add the flour all at once, stirring constantly until the dough forms a ball and pulls away from the sides of the pan. Remove from heat and let the dough cool for a few minutes.

2. Add the eggs:

  • Once the dough is cool enough to handle, beat in the eggs, one at a time, using a spoon or hand mixer. The dough will be thick but should come together smoothly.

3. Heat the oil:

  • In a deep frying pan or large pot, heat vegetable oil to 350°F (175°C). You’ll need enough oil to fry the churro bites in batches.

4. Shape the churro bites:

  • Transfer the churro dough to a piping bag fitted with a star tip (or just a Ziploc bag with the tip cut off).
  • Pipe small, bite-sized churro pieces directly into the hot oil, cutting them with scissors or your fingers to make tiny churro bites. Fry the churros in batches, making sure not to overcrowd the pan. Fry until golden brown, about 2-3 minutes, turning them with a slotted spoon for even cooking.

5. Prepare the coating:

  • While the churro bites are frying, mix the sugar, cinnamon, and sea salt together in a shallow bowl.

6. Coat the churro bites:

  • Once the churro bites are golden brown and crispy, remove them from the oil and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain any excess oil.
  • While still warm, roll the churro bites in the cinnamon-sugar-salt mixture, making sure they’re fully coated.

7. Serve:

  • Serve immediately while they’re warm and crispy. You can enjoy them as-is or dip them in a chocolate sauce, caramel, or even a bit more sea salt for an extra salty kick!

These Sweet and Salty Churro Bites are the perfect treat for those who love the contrast of sweet and salty flavors. Crispy on the outside and soft on the inside—who can resist? 😋
