Traditional Homemade Bread

Ingredients

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour (plus extra for kneading)
  • 2 tsp active dry yeast
  • 1 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 tbsp sugar (optional)
  • 1 1/2 cups warm water (about 110°F or 43°C)
  • 2 tbsp olive oil (optional)

Instructions

  1. Activate the Yeast: In a small bowl, combine the warm water, sugar (if using), and yeast. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until frothy.
  2. Mix the Dough: In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt. Make a well in the center and pour in the yeast mixture and olive oil. Mix until a dough starts to form.
  3. Knead the Dough: Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for about 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic. Add flour as needed to prevent sticking.
  4. First Rise: Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a damp cloth or plastic wrap, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1-2 hours, or until it doubles in size.
  5. Shape the Bread: Once risen, punch down the dough to release air. Shape it into a loaf or divide it into smaller pieces for rolls. Place in a greased loaf pan or on a baking sheet.
  6. Second Rise: Cover the shaped dough with a cloth and let it rise again for about 30-45 minutes, until puffy.
  7. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  8. Bake: Bake the bread for 25-30 minutes, or until golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.
  9. Cool: Remove from the oven and let cool in the pan for a few minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

Tips

  • For a crustier loaf, place a pan of water in the oven while baking.
  • Experiment with add-ins like herbs, garlic, or seeds for extra flavor!

Enjoy your homemade bread fresh from the oven!
