Why Your Towels Get Orange Stains That Won’t Wash Out — And How to Stop Them for Good

Posted on August 11, 2025

Orange stains on towels (and other laundry) are frustrating, but they’re usually caused by iron bacteria, mold, or mineral deposits—not dirt. Here’s why they happen and how to remove (and prevent) them for good.

Why Towels Get Orange Stains

  1. Iron in Water

    • If your water supply has high iron content, rust-colored stains can appear when the iron oxidizes (especially in humid environments like bathrooms).

    • Hard water (high in calcium/magnesium) can also react with soap, leaving orange or yellowish residues.

  2. Bacteria (Serratia marcescens or Iron Bacteria)

    • A pink-orange slimy bacteria called Serratia marcescens thrives in damp places (like towels left in a pile).

    • Iron bacteria (common in well water) leave rusty stains when they react with oxygen.

  3. Mildew or Mold

    • Damp towels that aren’t dried properly can develop orange mold stains over time.

  4. Body Oils + Soap Residue

    • Body oils, sweat, and soap buildup can mix with minerals in water, creating stubborn stains.

How to Remove Orange Stains

1. For Iron or Hard Water Stains

  • White Vinegar Soak

    • Soak towels in 1 part white vinegar + 4 parts hot water for 1–2 hours, then wash as usual.

    • Vinegar dissolves mineral deposits and kills bacteria.

  • Baking Soda + Hydrogen Peroxide Paste

    • Make a paste, scrub stains, let sit for 30 mins, then wash.

2. For Bacterial or Mold Stains

  • Chlorine Bleach (for white towels)

    • Soak in ½ cup bleach + 1 gallon water for 5–10 minutes, then wash.

  • Oxygen Bleach (for colors)

    • Use a scoop of oxyclean in hot water, soak overnight, then wash.

3. For Stubborn Stains

  • Iron Out or Rust Remover

    • Products like Iron Out or CLR can break down tough iron stains (follow instructions carefully).

How to Prevent Orange Stains

✅ Wash Towels Frequently – Don’t let damp towels sit in a hamper.
✅ Use Less Detergent – Excess soap traps minerals and bacteria.
✅ Add Vinegar to Rinse Cycle – Helps dissolve buildup.
✅ Dry Towels Completely – Hang them in sunlight (UV kills bacteria).
✅ Install a Water Softener – If hard water is the issue.
✅ Check Your Water Supply – Test for iron or bacteria if stains persist.

Final Tip

If stains keep coming back, your washing machine might need cleaning! Run an empty cycle with vinegar or bleach to remove mold or mineral buildup inside the drum.
