German Chocolate Sheet Cake Recipe

Ingredients:

For the Cake:

  • 1 cup (8 oz) German sweet chocolate, chopped
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter
  • 1 cup boiling water
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

For the Frosting:

  • 1 cup (8 oz) evaporated milk
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter
  • 3 large egg yolks, beaten
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 1/2 cups sweetened shredded coconut
  • 1 cup pecans, chopped

Instructions:

1. Prepare the Cake:

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a large sheet cake pan (approximately 18×13 inches).

2. Melt Chocolate:

  • In a saucepan, melt the German chocolate and butter together over low heat. Once melted, stir in the boiling water until smooth. Set aside to cool slightly.

3. Mix Dry Ingredients:

  • In a large bowl, sift together the flour, baking soda, baking powder, salt, and sugar.

4. Combine Ingredients:

  • In a separate bowl, whisk together the eggs and vanilla extract. Add the melted chocolate mixture to the dry ingredients, then mix in the egg mixture. Stir until just combined.

5. Bake:

  • Pour the batter into the prepared sheet pan and spread it evenly. Bake for about 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Allow the cake to cool in the pan.

6. Prepare the Frosting:

  • In a medium saucepan, combine the evaporated milk, sugar, butter, and beaten egg yolks. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until the mixture thickens (about 12-15 minutes). Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla, coconut, and pecans.

7. Frost the Cake:

  • Once the cake is completely cool, spread the coconut-pecan frosting evenly over the top.

8. Serve:

  • Slice and serve the cake warm or at room temperature. Enjoy!

Enjoy!

This German Chocolate Sheet Cake is sure to be a hit at any gathering, with its rich chocolate flavor and delightful frosting. Perfect for birthdays, potlucks, or just because!
