How to Get Rid of Mice in Your Home—For Good!

Mice are more than just a nuisance—they can spread disease, chew through wires, and multiply quickly. Here’s a step-by-step guide to eliminate them safely and prevent future infestations.

Step 1: Confirm You Have Mice

Signs of mice:
🐭 Droppings (small, dark pellets, often near food or walls)
🐭 Gnaw marks on food packaging, wires, or baseboards
🐭 Scratching noises in walls or ceilings (especially at night)
🐭 Nests (shredded paper, fabric, or insulation in hidden spots)

Step 2: Cut Off Their Resources

Mice stay where they find food, water, and shelter.
✔ Seal food in airtight glass/metal containers (no cardboard or plastic bags).
✔ Fix leaks (mice need water daily).
✔ Declutter (remove piles of paper, boxes, or fabrics where they nest).

Step 3: Block Entry Points

Mice can squeeze through a hole the size of a dime!
🔧 Seal gaps with:

  • Steel wool (mice can’t chew through it) + caulk or spray foam.

  • Metal mesh for larger holes (vents, pipes, foundations).
    🔍 Check common entry spots:

  • Around pipes, vents, doors, windows, and attic/crawl spaces.

Step 4: Set Traps (The Right Way)

Option 1: Snap Traps (Most Effective)

  • Bait with peanut butter (more tempting than cheese).

  • Place perpendicular to walls (mice run along edges).

  • Wear gloves (mice avoid human scent).

Option 2: Humane Traps (Catch & Release)

  • Check traps frequently (mice can die from stress).

  • Release at least 2+ miles away (they’ll return otherwise).

Option 3: Natural Deterrents (Prevention)

  • Peppermint oil (soak cotton balls and place in entry points).

  • Ultrasonic repellents (mixed results, best for mild problems).

❌ Avoid poison (mice can die in walls, causing odors and attracting other pests).

Step 5: Deep Clean & Sanitize

  • Disinfect droppings (wear a mask & gloves—use bleach or enzyme cleaner).

  • Vacuum upholstery & carpets (mice leave scent trails).

  • Wash pet bowls daily (mice love pet food!).

Step 6: Prevent Future Infestations

  • Keep grass/brush trimmed (mice hide near foundations).

  • Store firewood away from the house.

  • Use door sweeps on exterior doors.

When to Call a Pro:

  • If traps aren’t working after 1-2 weeks.

  • If you hear lots of activity (sign of a large infestation).

  • If you’re dealing with rats (they’re tougher than mice).

Final Tip: Stay Persistent!

Mice breed quickly, so repeat treatments may be needed. But with these steps, you’ll reclaim your home—naturally and effectively!
