Ingredients

  • 3 ¾ cups (450 g) all-purpose flour or bread flour
  • 2 ¼ tsp (1 packet) active dry yeast or instant yeast
  • 1 ½ tsp salt
  • 1 ¼ cups warm water (about 110°F/43°C)
  • 2 tbsp sugar (for a hint of sweetness)
  • 2 tbsp olive oil or melted butter

Instructions

1. Activate the Yeast (if using active dry yeast):

  1. In a small bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy. If you’re using instant yeast, skip this step and mix it directly with the dry ingredients.

2. Mix the Dough:

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine flour and salt. Make a well in the center and pour in the yeast mixture (or water if using instant yeast) and olive oil/butter.
  2. Mix with a wooden spoon or your hands until a shaggy dough forms.

3. Knead the Dough:

  1. Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface and knead for about 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic. If the dough is sticky, add a little flour, 1 tbsp at a time, but avoid over-flouring.

4. First Rise:

  1. Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover with a damp towel or plastic wrap, and let it rise in a warm place for 1-1.5 hours, or until it has doubled in size.

5. Shape the Dough:

  1. Punch down the dough to release air. Shape it into a loaf or divide it into smaller portions for rolls.
  2. If making a loaf, place it in a greased 9×5-inch loaf pan. For rolls, place them on a parchment-lined baking sheet.

6. Second Rise:

  1. Cover and let the dough rise again for 30-45 minutes, or until puffy.

7. Bake:

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Bake the loaf for 25-30 minutes or until golden brown and it sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.
  3. For rolls, bake for 15-20 minutes.

8. Cool and Serve:

  1. Allow the bread to cool slightly on a wire rack before slicing or serving.

Tips

  • Add-ins: Customize with herbs, cheese, seeds, or dried fruits.
  • Whole wheat option: Replace half the flour with whole wheat flour for a heartier loaf.
  • Storing: Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days or freeze for longer storage.

Enjoy your fresh, homemade Non-Sourdough Bread! 🥖✨
