Swedish Meatballs with Egg Noodles

Preparation Time:

  • Cook Time: 30 minutes
  • Total Time: 50 minutes

Difficulty Level:

  • Medium

Ingredients:

Meatballs:

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1/2 lb ground pork
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 1/4 tsp ground allspice
  • 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 2 tbsp butter (for frying)

Sauce:

  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Egg Noodles:

  • 12 oz egg noodles
  • Salt (for boiling water)
  • 1 tbsp butter (optional, for tossing noodles)

Instructions:

  1. Prepare Meatballs:
    • In a large bowl, combine the breadcrumbs and milk. Let sit for 5 minutes.
    • Add the ground beef, ground pork, chopped onion, egg, salt, pepper, allspice, and nutmeg to the breadcrumb mixture. Mix well until all ingredients are combined.
    • Shape the mixture into 1-inch meatballs.
  2. Cook Meatballs:
    • In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the meatballs in batches, cooking until browned on all sides and cooked through, about 8-10 minutes per batch. Remove meatballs from the skillet and set aside.
  3. Make the Sauce:
    • In the same skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Stir in the flour and cook for 1-2 minutes, until golden brown.
    • Gradually whisk in the beef broth and heavy cream. Add the Worcestershire sauce and continue to cook, stirring constantly, until the sauce thickens, about 5-7 minutes. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
    • Return the meatballs to the skillet, coating them with the sauce. Simmer for an additional 5 minutes.
  4. Cook Egg Noodles:
    • While the meatballs are simmering, cook the egg noodles according to the package instructions. Drain and toss with a little butter if desired.
  5. Serve:
    • Serve the Swedish meatballs over the egg noodles, spooning extra sauce over the top. Garnish with fresh parsley if desired.
