Delicious Bread Pudding with Vanilla Sauce in a Casserole Dish

Preparation Time:

  • Prep Time: 20 minutes
  • Cook Time: 45 minutes
  • Total Time: 1 hour 5 minutes

Difficulty Level:

  • Easy

Ingredients:

For the Bread Pudding:
  • 6 cups day-old bread, cubed (French bread or brioche works well)
  • 4 large eggs
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1/2 cup raisins (optional)
  • 1/2 cup chopped nuts (optional)
For the Vanilla Sauce:
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Instructions:

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13-inch casserole dish.
  2. Prepare Bread Pudding: Place the cubed bread in the greased casserole dish. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, whole milk, heavy cream, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, ground cinnamon, and ground nutmeg until well combined.
  3. Combine Ingredients: Pour the egg mixture over the bread cubes, making sure all the bread is soaked. Gently press down on the bread to help it absorb the liquid. Drizzle the melted butter over the top. If using, sprinkle the raisins and chopped nuts evenly over the mixture.
  4. Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 45 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the pudding is set. A knife inserted into the center should come out clean.
  5. Prepare Vanilla Sauce: While the bread pudding is baking, make the vanilla sauce. In a medium saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter. Stir in the granulated sugar and brown sugar until dissolved. Gradually add the heavy cream, stirring constantly. Cook for 3-5 minutes, or until the sauce thickens slightly. Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract.
  6. Serve: Allow the bread pudding to cool slightly before serving. Drizzle the warm vanilla sauce over each serving.
