Buttermilk Fried Crispy Chicken Sandwich 🍔✨

Juicy, tender chicken marinated in seasoned buttermilk, coated in an ultra-crispy crust, and stacked on a buttery bun with crunchy pickles and creamy sauce. A fast-food favorite—homemade even better!

🍗 Ingredients

For the Chicken:

  • 2 boneless, skinless chicken breasts (or thighs, pounded to ½-inch thickness)

  • 1 cup buttermilk

  • 1 tbsp hot sauce (optional, for spice)

  • 1 tsp garlic powder

  • 1 tsp paprika

  • 1 tsp salt

  • ½ tsp black pepper

For the Crispy Coating:

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour

  • ½ cup cornstarch (for extra crunch)

  • 1 tsp onion powder

  • 1 tsp garlic powder

  • 1 tsp smoked paprika

  • ½ tsp cayenne pepper (adjust to taste)

  • 1 tsp salt

  • ½ tsp black pepper

  • Oil for frying (vegetable, peanut, or canola)

For Assembly:

  • 2 brioche or potato buns, toasted

  • Mayonnaise or spicy mayo

  • Lettuce (iceberg or romaine)

  • Sliced pickles

  • Tomato slices (optional)

🔥 Instructions

1. Marinate the Chicken

  • In a bowl, mix buttermilk, hot sauce, garlic powder, paprika, salt, and pepper.

  • Add chicken, ensuring it’s fully submerged. Cover and refrigerate at least 2 hours (or overnight for maximum tenderness).

2. Prep the Coating

  • In a shallow dish, whisk flour, cornstarch, onion powder, garlic powder, smoked paprika, cayenne, salt, and pepper.

3. Dredge & Double-Dip

  1. Remove chicken from buttermilk (let excess drip off).

  2. Coat in flour mixture, pressing firmly to adhere.

  3. Dip back into buttermilk, then into flour again for extra crunch.

4. Fry to Golden Perfection

  • Heat 1 inch of oil in a deep skillet to 350°F (175°C).

  • Fry chicken 3–4 mins per side until golden and internal temp reaches 165°F (74°C).

  • Drain on a wire rack (not paper towels—to keep crispy!).

5. Assemble the Sandwich

  • Spread mayo on toasted buns.

  • Layer with lettuce, chicken, pickles, and tomato.

  • Serve immediately (with extra napkins!).

💡 Pro Tips

  • Extra crispy? Add 1 tsp baking powder to the flour mix.

  • Oven hack: Bake at 400°F (200°C) for 20–25 mins on a wire rack (spray with oil).

  • Gluten-free? Use GF flour + cornstarch.

🍟 Pair With:

  • Crispy fries

  • Coleslaw

  • Sweet tea

This sandwich is crunchy, juicy, and packed with flavor—no drive-thru needed! 😍

Want a spicy Nashville-style version? Drizzle with hot honey or cayenne-infused oil! 🌶️
